A Backyard Passion Play

Trevor has obviously been touched and impacted by what he is hearing and learning about at Bible School (Community Bible study class), at church Sunday School, and through our recent use of Resurrection Eggs. I was so astonished yesterday when he wanted to play Jesus. So we had a backyard passion play.

Trevor marked himself up with red marker to represent where Jesus was nailed to the cross, and asked me to make him a crown of thorns. We even added some red marker to his forehead where the crown of thorns sits.

Trevor led the way into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.

Evan and I shouted “Hosanna in the Highest” and waved pine branches. Trevor rode a wood log to represent the donkey.

Trevor, Evan and I celebrated the Last Supper where Jesus told his disciples that his Body and Blood are a new covenant.

Trevor stood against the wall to show how Jesus died on the cross for us. He even marked his side to show how Jesus was stuck with a spear to fulfill scripture.

Just like Jesus, Trevor laid in the tomb, and Evan and I pretended to roll the big stone shut.

Evan and I then pretended to be Mary Magadelene, Mary mother of James, and Salome who went to visit Jesus tomb. We, like the women of the bible, were surprised to find the stone rolled away, and Jesus missing. Then I pretended to be the angel who told the woman that “He is Risen.”

Jesus later appeared to his friends, the disciples, and showed them his scars. He asks them to touch his scars and believe. (Trevor smiling and happy to represent the Risen Jesus, and showing his scars)

Wow! I’m blown away that my 5 year old knows this story, and wants to act it out. The faith of children is so precious to God, and I am honored to help nurture it and watch it grow.

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Luke 18:16-17
