I have been excited and glad that our house has provided many opportunities for planting trees and developing new flower beds. My problem is I often bite off more than I can chew (landscaping the hill and keeping it weeded) and I don't always anticipate how things will grow. We put in this garage flower bed a few years ago, and I love how it has dressed up that area. The problem is things have gotten way too big. Dad helped by moving out two gigantic black eyed susan's in April, and they are doing very well along the wall. When I bought them, I didn't realize they were a tall variety. When he split them, I think we got 9 plantings out of them! As you can see from this picture, I will have some more transplanting to do this fall. The varigated grass was also supposed to be a dwarf variety! I think it's new home will be around the light post.

The major problem I am dealing with now is thankfully tucked behind the yellow twig dog wood, and this problem area can't be seen from the driveway or street. Check out the over growth of the forsythia (which got a hair cut last weekend), grandma's sprawling yellow buttercup, a too tall rose bush and gigantic calla lilies. It looks like a jungle! Because I haven't learned my lessons, I have created more work for myself. Hopefully I will continue to learn from my gardening mistakes, and try to plan better when I plant in the future.

We are going to try to transplant some of Grandma Bell's yellow buttercup on the hillside behind our fence. Jeremy hates cutting that steep little hill, and since this stuff seems to love it down here, I think it will create a nice ground cover.

The weather lately has been beautiful, and it has been nice to get out and do some yard work. Turns out Trevor enjoys pulling weeds! He liked filling the bucket, and when nearly full, would say "that's plenty; let's go mommy" which was then followed by us holding hands and walking to the wheel barrel to dump all of weeds.

This is one of the black eyed susan's that Dad transplanted in April. The black eyed susan's look so pretty against the retaining wall. I can't wait until they are all blooming.

This is our front porch flower bed with volunteer black eyed susan's in front of the day lillies. I wasn't sure if I would like them, but they add a nice contrast in front of the lillies and will provide color once the day lillies are done blooming. Luckily, this is one flower bed that I don't have to worry too much about. But in time, I'm sure I will have something that needs thinning out.
They all look so full and healthy. I prefer beds that are lush and I like it when the plants are touching. That forsythia will get massive if you don't keep it trimmed down. We have seen people around here trim them like hedges and they look really pretty still and look like yellow boxes when they bloom. Our forsythia (in front yard to the side) was dying out last summer and fall, we yanked nearly all of it out this spring and it has already returned to its full size! It has been an exceptionally Spring and Summer I am not surprised at how full everything has gotten.
ReplyDeleteI really like your flower beds! All your hard work has really payed off.
